Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Professional Size, $29

By now, readers of this blog and everyone who knows me (or Tori) knows that we swear by Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion. We originally reviewed the product when we first started this blog and gave it a rave review and even a "where have you been all my life" tag. You can read the review Tori wrote of why this product is so great here. So when I saw that Urban Decay released a Professional Size version of my favorite beauty product I knew it was something I must have.

The Professional Size is a big tube full of the classic Primer Potion in the original nude shade. I prefer the nude shade to all of the other primer shades. The main difference between this and the original bottle is that this doesn't come with application wand. I find that the absence of the wand is actually a great thing! You get more product out of a bottle and you don't have to mess with the wand getting all goopy.

Since I used this product every single day this Professional Size is actually a great value for me. I get a lot more of the primer for $29 which is about $13 more than the original genie bottle. I think that this tube will last me longer and that I won't waste any of the primer. In the genie bottle I think that a lot of primer just gets stuck and doesn't have a chance to get out.

Final verdict:

Cost: $29 for a big tube. This is made for professionals but available for anyone to purchase.

Do you need any kind of tool to apply it?: I find that using your fingers is the best way to apply the primer evenly.

Any tips?: You don't need to use a lot of primer per eyelid. If you take a look at the third picture, I use just about that much primer for my top lid. I have big eyelids so someone else might need even less. I would apply a little less of that on my bottom lash line if I want to line beneath my eyes.

Repeat offender?: I would never buy the genie bottle again now that the Professional Size bottle is available, so yes!

Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Liner in Distortion, $18

I love Sephora's Beauty Insider points program. I racked up 500 points and got a set of 4 Urban Decay 24-7 eyeliners plus this Heavy Metal Glitter Liner in Distortion. I was more excited for the pencils than I was about this, but I thought, why not try it out? And I'm really happy I did!


First of all, this stuff is super glittery. This particular color is full of light-colored, iridescent, pearly glitter pieces. (Check out their other colors on Sephora's page.) I thought it would be hard to get a lot of glitter out (kind of like cheaper glitter nailpolishes that go on mostly clear) but was surprised at the amount that gets on your skin. It's really easy to use--the glitter goes on easily and dries in an instant so you can layer on more and more (if you get excited like I do!).

What really sold me on this is that it does NOT come off. With a lot of glitter products the pieces will fall all over your face and get your eyes (ouch). But, I put this to the test: The other night I used some over my black eyeliner, just on the corners (it looked fab, I must say). I danced and sweated all night and it didn't move at all! Perfect for the party-goer in all of us!


Final verdict
Cost: $18--about the same as other Urban Decay liners and shadows.
Easy: The product comes out easily on a thin liner brush, making it easy to put on a little or a lot. Plus it dries quickly, so it doesn't get everywhere, and you can layer as much as you want.
Glittery: OMG, so glittery. And with more applications comes more glitter! You could probably wear it on its own, but I think it would probably look best (and more dramatic) if you put it on top of a good eyeliner.
Stays put: Unlike a lot of glittery eye makeup, once this dries (a couple seconds) it won't move at all. No need to worry about it getting all over your face, no matter how hard you party!
Repeat offender: I'm in love. I kind of wanna buy them all! Actually, I really like the Catfight (bright pink) and Stagedive (bright turquoise) colors. If you love glitter, you'll absolutely love this liner.

Urban Decay Naked Palette, $44

This is the eyeshadow palette made for all makeup wearers, whether your only use eyeshadow sometimes or don't leave the house without it. The Naked Palette by Urban Decay was released not too long ago and has been selling out fast. Luckily this product is not a limited edition product. Even though it has been sold out on Sephora.com and isn't on the Urban Decay site right now you can still find it (I got mine at a Sephora store) and you will be able to find it for a long time, Urban Decay says that it is a permanent palette.

I wasn't drawn to this palette until I saw it in person. The twelve shadows range from light to darker and are a mix of smoky, grey, gold, and brown hues. The mixing possibilities seem endless with the variety of shades that are provided. The set also comes with a mini genie bottle of primer and a double-ended 24/7 Glide-On pencil in Zero (jet black) and Whiskey (chocolate brown). You basically have all of the tools to create whatever eye look you are going for.

This palette is made to be a neutral set that is still fresh and exciting. You can definitely get a neutral professional look with this palette or you can even create a sexy dark look too. The colors like Virgin, Sin, and Naked make great highlighters and base shadows while Half Baked, Smog, and Darkhorse are perfect for blending and shading. The last three colors in the palette Hustle, Creep, and Gunmetal are all great darker colors that can be blended with any of the lighter shadows to create a smoky look but they are also perfect solid shadows on their own.

I would suggest this palette to anyone who feels like they need a good everyday eyeshadow kit. While it is a palette full of neutrals it still manages to be fun and interesting and offers a variety of color and shadow ranges (from matte to shimmery).

Final verdict:
Cost: $44, you get 12 shadows, a mini primer, and two mini eyeliners
Will this really work for anyone?: I honestly think that Urban Decay created a palette that will appeal to all different women. I love this palette and so does my mom so I think it can really apply for any age group. The neutrals it promises aren't dull and they shadows are good quality--I don't know any girl who wouldn't be satisfied with that.
Repeat offender?: I think that I am going to use this palette primarily for a while. I want to experiment with mixing the different shades. I predict that this will be a palette that I actually finish and will have to purchase again. I'm really into it!

Classic SGB: Urban Decay De-Slick Mattifying Powder, $30

So, this is one instance where my experience with the product has changed. I've used it everyday since I bought it and I see a significant difference in my oily skin. Believe me, it's been tested in this summer heat! I've noticed it making a huge difference in my bangs--now that my skin is less oily, my bangs look much better. No matter what I'm doing, this stuff keeps my face in check. So, now I think I may be willing to pay $30, since it totally works! -T

I bought Urban Decay's De-Slick Mattifying Powder on a whim. I had a Macy's gift card and decided to spend it on something I probably wouldn't normally buy--$30 face powder fell into that category. I have combination skin and get self-conscious about it getting oily in my T-zone, but I hate wearing any kind of face makeup (usually feels too heavy and fake). I also have the suspicion that my bangs are looking gross by the end of the day because of my oily forehead. With the warmer weather coming along, I felt like this was a good time to try it out.

The compact is really pretty--clear purple with silver designs of skulls and filigree (much like the Ammo Eyeshadow Palette). The compact is bigger than I thought it would be, basically about the size of my palm. The mirror is a really good size. I feel like for $30, it better be big!

It comes with a flat sponge that's rubbery on one side and cushiony white on the other.

I like the sponge. It fits nicely in the compact and makes it easy to dab at or sweep across your skin. But as you can see, it's already getting dirty, even though I just use it on my bare skin. I feel like if you used it over foundation, it would definitely change the color of that cushion pretty quickly.

The powder is pure matte white, translucent when it gets on your skin--unless you get a little powder-happy, then you're definitely gonna see some of the white build up. But hey, if you're going for the super pale look, might not be a bad thing! It has a kind of tea tree oil scent, probably to aid with the mattifying.

This stuff definitely mattes out the shine. This morning I put it on in the sunlight so I had a nice glare on my forehead (ugh lol) and I could see a distinct difference between where I put it and where I didn't. To my surprise, it made a noticeable difference under my eyes as well. I think something about the lavender-white tone helped chill out my undereye darkness. I also tried it out one day when I skipped my shower (gross, I know, but anything for the blog!) and was kind of surprised with how I didn't look like a complete greaseball. And it might actually help the oil buildup on my bangs--no real definitive evidence, though.

To be honest, it does its job adequately but in actuality it's no miracle worker. You do have to reapply throughout the day. I feel like it takes the shine away but not necessarily the actual oil. I mean, my skin feels velvety, but it's almost like I can still feel the oil underneath. I'm glad I have it because it's gonna come in handy in a lot of situations, but I wouldn't have spent $30 on it if I didn't have the gift card. There are probably cheaper products that would do a comparable job (other blue-tinted powders, blotting sheets, etc.).

Final verdict
Cost: $30 is a bit much for a product that didn't really "wow" me. You do get a lot, though, and it will probably last a pretty long time. At least the compact is pretty and the mirror's big.
Skin type: Oily to super oily. I have some dry skin on my nose (stupid allergies) and it made the powder show up a lot.
Mattifying?: It works--it takes the shine down. But it doesn't really absorb the oil. You will probably have to reapply a couple times through the day.
Repeat offender?: While I'm happy to have it and will probably use it until it's gone, I'm not sure if I would spend $30 on it again. I feel like I could get a cheaper product to do basically the same job.

On a side note, they have released De-Slick in a Tube. Check it out at their site. Nylon likes it, but it has some mixed reviews on Sephora.com. I'm glad I got the powder instead of the "gel" though--it seems like you get more and can use it when needed.

Classic SGB: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, $18

Oh primer, how did we ever live without you? Just stocked up on another bottle in original, which has become my latest favorite because I can wear it all over my eye--invisibly!

If there is one makeup product that we could never give up it would be this. The years before we discovered this primer were full of creased eyelids, smeared shadow, and colors not living up to their potential. Not only does it work with great eyeshadows, it will actually improve the color and staying power of lower quality eyeshadows. The Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer comes in two different shades, Original and Sin. The Original is pretty much a sheer nude base without any particular color so once blended in it’s invisible. The Sin shade is a shimmery mix of pink and gold tones while still remaining a pretty neutral base color that will coordinate with any eyeshadow just as well as the Original. It’s packaged to resemble a genie bottle, with a sponge-tipped angled wand as an applicator. It’s easy to use, lasts a long time, and is definitely worth its price. No lie, this stuff will last through a humid day, an evening of partying, and even a full night’s sleep without budging.



To use, first unscrew the applicator, take it out, and wipe the excess on the rim. Apply a good amount over your entire eyelid (and even under your eyelid, if desired). Using your finger, blend the primer until even. Wait a few seconds for it to dry, and then pile on the eyeshadow and eyeliner like crazy. Wait a few hours, check the mirror, and check the freshness.

Final verdict:
Cost: $17 (for regular bottle)
Does it keep its promise?: YES.
How long the actual product lasts: If used on a daily basis one of the original sized bottles lasts at least 6 months.
Repeat Offender?: We will never wear eyeshadow without it. Tell all your friends.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Eden, $18

You know I love my Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer. LOVE it. In fact, it was one of our very first reviews. I use it in Original (clear) and Sin (sparkly pink), though I'd say Original is more versatile. After trying it once, I determined that I can never wear any eye makeup without it. Simple as that!

Recently they came out with a new shade, Eden. They call it a "tawny matte shade." My first reaction was, well, why? Original is totally clear, and Sin makes sparkle, so why would I need anything else? They said that this matte, natural, and neutral shade would hide bluish discoloration and still do its work as a primer. So, I got a sample of it with my latest Sephora purchase and decided to try it out!

I don't really have much to say about it except that I really didn't like it. Here's how my trial went: I opened the container and put some on my finger. I tried to blend it into my eyelid and was immediately surprised by the opacity of the color and its thickness. I tried to blend it around but it felt thick and sticky and wouldn't blend easily. It started to dry but it still wasn't evenly smoothed over my eyelid. I didn't feel like trying to work with it, so I took it off. Sorry I don't have any pics of it on my eye, but I just really lost patience with it.

Final verdict
Cost: $18, same as the other colors.
Color: The color is like a medium shade of foundation, matte and opaque. It didn't match my skin tone and I wonder how it would work on a variety of skin tones.
Texture: For some reason it felt thicker and stickier than the Original or Sin. It didn't blend easily at all and dried quickly.
Repeat offender: No, I would not buy Eden. I will continue to buy Original and Sin because they're amazing but I would not recommend this one. It really missed the mark (and I still don't even see why they made it at all).

Wishlist - 7/9/10

Hey guys, it's time again for me to rant on about how much I wanna buy makeup and nail polish and other essentials like that!

BTW, it's my mom's birthday today. Happy birthday, Mom! I got her The Multiple from Nars in Riviera (shimmery pink). It's a cream-to-powder stick that you can use for your lips, cheeks, wherever. It has a lot of really great reviews, so I hope she likes it!

Currently I am lusting over Urban Decay's new line of fake eyelashes. I really like the look of the plush one, or the little colored accents. I don't know if $16 is reasonable for eyelashes though . . .

Speaking of Urban, they now have the Ammo Palette (reviewed here) plus the primer potion (our staple) for $39 (would be $54 if you bought them separately). It's only in the new Eden color, which I haven't tried yet, but is supposed to be a matte natural that can hide bluish discoloration. I checked it as a sample for my last Sephora purchase, so we'll see how it works.

I've gotten this renewed interest in my nails, especially through the tumblr nailcrazy. Recently they posted a pic of nails with Nabi heart glitter on them. Omg! Want.

Are you signed up for HauteLook? They do sales on designer clothes but also on designer makeup. Right now they have this awesome Lorac sale where makeup is super discounted ($18 items for $4!). You might wanna act fast before it sells out! But don't worry, they tend to have great sales pretty often.

What I'm Wearing - 5/21/10

Happy Friday! Last weekend I tried a new look on my eyes. I was going for a more interesting way to get the "no eyeliner" look, different from my usual "as much eyeliner as possible" look. I used:

-Urban Decay's primer (Sin on top lid; Original on outside and bottom)
-Urban Decay eyeshadow in Scratch (a beautiful shimmery baby pink for across the lids included in this palette)
-Maybelline eyeshadow in Urban Brown (for the outside wing, crease, and a little underneath)
-Urban Decay Liquid Eyeliner in Roach (just a little on the outside half of the top lid)
-Clinique Lash Power Mascara Long-Wearing Formula in Black Onyx (top and bottom, for a clean, "awake" look)
-Nars Orgasm blush


After priming, I swept Scratch across my entire lid with an eyeshadow brush (from EcoTools). Then, using the top of the brush, I worked Urban Brown into the crease, extending the line past my eyelid for a little wing. I took the angled brush and smudged some Urban Brown into and right underneath my bottom lashes (outer half of my eye only) and connected it to the wing. I cleaned the eyeshadow brush and used it to blur and soften the lines, making it look more natural but still dramatic. I lined the outer part of my top lid with Roach--I couldn't go completely without eyeliner! I think it looked really cool but I'll still need to work on perfecting the angles. The colors are amazing though--brown and pink are so flattering on hazel eyes.

Urban Decay Deluxe Shadow Box, $38

I know we have done a few Urban Decay eyeshadow reviews for you all so you really don't need me to tell you how awesome their eyeshadows are, but I still can't help but gush! I got this palette a few weeks back when Urban Decay had a special 30% off promotion. The Deluxe Shadow Box comes with 9 different eyeshadows, two double sided sponge brushes, and a small tube of my beloved eye primer.


I decided on this palette because I really wanted something with some colors that were nothing like I had. I was initially going to go for some single shadows but I realized I'd be spending about the same on 2 shadows that I would be for 9! I picked the Deluxe Shadow Box due to the blue shadow called Peace. I thought that it was sooo pretty and would be wonderful to use as a liner. This palette also doesn't have any of the same colors that Ammo has. The only color I have a single shadow case of is Ransom and this is a beautiful neon purple that makes my eyes pop, so more is fun!


This sleek palette is perfect for me because it includes a variety of neutrals and some daring shadows that will suit whatever mood I am in. I also love the tiny bottle of primer--this will definitely have a place in my bag whenever I go out of town (I tend to always pack heavy so the smaller the better).

Final verdict:
Cost: $38, that is about 4.20 per eyeshadow. Personally I like to buy palettes if I think I will want to use all the colors in them. Obviously some I will like more than the others but it is worth it to me to buy a palette filled with options for around the same price as only 2 shadows. More bang for my buck right?
Are the shadows as pretty as they seem in the box?: Yes! Urban Decay eyeshadow is and always will be one of my go-to shadows for this reason--they look the same on your eyelids as they look in their packaging.
Repeat offender?: I'd like for Urban Decay to put out some new shades of shadows. I wouldn't want to buy another palette if it has repeated eyeshadow shades that other palettes do. But like I said before, I'll keep getting their shadows as long as they keep making them!

What I'm Wearing - 4/23/10

Love the eyeshadow--dark and sultry, but super vibrant and purple. Tip: For some reason, you MUST use the primer potion with this shade. I wore it once without it and it just didn't work. In the container it looks almost black, but actually has a lot of color. The website describes it as having a "red sheen"--I don't really see what they mean, but I guess it is a more red shade of purple than a blue shade.

Using the angled brush from the EcoTools Bamboo set, I smudged some eyeshadow on the outer edge of my lower lash line and connected it with the eyeshadow on top. I kept my eyeliner super thin.

I really liked the effect--super dark on top but not too dramatic on bottom, which stopped it from being too over top. My eyes still looked awake, so it worked for daytime.

Sweet Deals, Vol. 2

Walmart sells Hard Candy now! (Am I a little late on this? Oh well, still exciting!) Hard Candy has all kinds of makeup in pretty packaging (I'm such a sucker for a well-designed box), but their nailpolish repertoire is really what they're known for. I'm falling in love with this pretty teal, this sparkly wine, and this dark glittery masterpiece that reminds me of a hot summer street, all just $5 each. Plus, who can resist those awesome heart-shaped rings?

MAC knows I've got spring fever and is tempting me with these yummy, shiny lipglosses, or as they call them, lipglasses. Isn't the Partial to Pink color so sweet? ($18)

Oh em gee, the Harajuku Lovers perfumes are in little summer bikinis! I'm this one, Mirna is this one.

I think the next brand I'm going to try is MAKE UP FOR EVER, specifically this breathtaking black cream eyeshadow (this picture here is a total inspiration, even though it sounds like most reviewers on Sephora used it as a cream eyeliner). PS, they totally did the makeup for The Runaways. I can't wait to see their awesome rock star makeup and outfits.

Urban Decay Liquid Liner, $18

(Urban Decay Liquid Liner in Ecstasy and Roach)
Oh Urban Decay, how I adore your eye makeup. Urban Decay Liquid Liner is a fantastic liquid eyeliner with intense color and metallic shimmer, bringing an unexpected "pop" to your eyes. The long handle and thin paint brush applicator make application easy. I grab the handle and give it a good shake before using, just to make sure the brush has a ton of product on it. The liner (and all the shimmery lovely goodness) stays in place, too. It comes in 13 colors that complement their eyeshadows.

(Ecstasy)
Ecstasy is a beautifully bright and vibrant purple, perfect for attention-grabbing, party-lovin' makeup fun.

Cost: $18 is a good price for the quality product you get. Believe me, it lasts a long time!
Color: The colors are bright, intense, metallic, and shimmery--those are some awesome adjectives there. And, if you're not into shimmer, they also have a normal black.
Application: I'm a big fan of the paint brush-like feel of the handle. The liner is thick so you don't need a precise hand to get it right.
Repeat offender: Urban Decay is pretty much always a repeat offender. I really want to get Oil Slick, shimmery black, or Shattered, metallic teal. If I run out of these I'd probably get more, but I've had them for a while and they're still pretty full!
